March 22, 2003 - Reno, NV

Welcome to the Higher and Higher Tour!

I am heartbroken.  There's no possible way to comfort me, so don't try!  My dreams are shattered, my life is in shambles.

Someone HIT Megabucks last night for $39 Million Dollars.  This "someone" was not me!  I only hope he will contribute it all to charity, as I would have done.  ;  )

Writing until 4:30am is a superhuman act of will.  It's no wonder I don't remember a darn thing I wrote the next day.  I felt comfortable staying up because I *knew* I could sleep in and wake rested and refreshed whenever my body and mind had had enough.  Imagine my surprise at 8:30 am when the phone rang!  It's true: there's no rest for the wicked.

THE FASHION REPORT
JL - Black long-slvd shirt, ruffle with pleats on either side, leathers, boots
JH - White crepe shirt with full sleeves, black slacks
GE - Jimi Hendrix shirt, black slacks
Paul - white long slvd shirt with two breast pockets

Paul caught my eye tonight- he looked great!  Great hair, great smile and lit well enough to see for a change.  He always has the most pleasant expression.

The Battle of the Buttons
Whoa!  JL has jumped into the lead here.  I'm not sure he has ever looked better than he did on stage tonight, and there were NUMEROUS comments about him.  One gal said he looked ten years younger than when she saw him on tour last fall.  His hair looked fabulous and the all black outfit was very becoming.  He was full of energy from the first note to the last, danced, moved - he just was happening.  He had that "dangerous" look one sees in the TOSOL video that is very exciting.  Ummmm.  *I* could hardly keep my eyes off him.  He lit up the stage!

Oh, and his shirt was, for the second night, unbuttoned to mid chest.  :  )  Mr Rock 'n' Roll took charge of the stage in Reno!

(Ed:  I try to refrain from making personal comments which are not part of the review proper.  However, since I'm NOT in Reno, and I AM a John-fan, the two paragraphs above have prompted me to say...

AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!!)

THE CONCERT
The 2003 setlist was performed without an intermission.  The large crowd was very similar to the prior evening; lots of applause, usually from a seated position.  The concert was performed pretty close to perfection, with only a very few glitches or errors.  Justin's guitar was not on for a few measures in LOM, but he caught it pretty quickly.  I've noticed JH varying the guitar part in the jam at the end of English Sunset.  It sounds great and adds to a wonderful moment on stage.  TOSOL sticks out in my mind at this concert.  It was an extremely good performance this evening.  I always look forward to TOSOL as a break from the sometimes-syrupy love songs.  It's more in line with the introspection of the Core 7.  John was really swinging that bass on it.  I love the way he saunters over to Justin prior to the highly erotic guitar thrusts.

Singer is the other song that caught my attention this evening.  I don't like this version.  It's too light!  All right, Ray's gone, and that's the way things are.  However, Ray gave it the punch it requires.  It's not working.  That song desperately needs SOMETHING.  Maybe the keyboards need to be pulled forward in the mix.  That might help.  <shrug>  I'd sure try something!

Justin seemed to strain tonight on IKYOTS.  Noticeable sniffing going on too.  More than any other song in the setlist, that one tells the story.  It takes 100 percent to pull it off.  The strain was minor and I'm sure it was unnoticeable to most of the audience.

It's great to experience a wild rock 'n roll concert in a venue where louder is better, but I'm looking forward to Santa Rosa tomorrow night and the return to a fine hall where the beauty of the music can be appreciated.
