Mohegan Sun Casino

Though we had planned to travel the next day to Mohegan Sun casino, I felt anxious and unsettled in Boston, unable to sleep or rest.  SueC, congenial as always, agreed to “beat the traffic” and travel in the wee hours to the casino, where we knew the slot machines would welcome us with open arms.  We were also anxious to get to the box office and see if there was any chance of improving our less than lovely 5th row seats.  There’s one phrase that we frequently hear that sets our ears on fire every time:  but there isn’t a BAD seat in the house!  Oh, yes there is!!!

And we were in them at Mohegan Sun!

Mohegan Sun is one of the most STRIKING places I have ever been, not to be a natural wonder.  It’s breathtaking!  I felt like a hobbit walking through the woods, but with nary a Tom-noddy in sight.  I want to go back, in fact, after I discovered the T3 line in the room, I wanted to never leave!  SueC and I will be doing all our future Ticketmaster buys from a room at Mohegan Sun.  We spent a lovely day there, walking, shopping and eating.  I slipped off for a sorely needed nap, though the casino was singing to me.

THE VENUE
The venue per se is not on the same spectacular level of the rest of the casino complex.  Let me describe it by saying that they are having a Bulls vs Celtics game there next week.  It’s set up most closely to a basketball arena.  They partitioned it off for the concert, reducing seating to around 4300 from 10,000 total.  It was sold out.  The flat floor was not the best place to sit (especially in 5th row on the right), but the stage was fairly high and it wasn’t a problem to see over the dozens of heads in front of us.  The saving grace of the evening was the two HUGE FABULOUS video screens on either side of the venue.  WOW!!!  I was a few seats from the far side, and the screens were so clear, that I constantly found myself glancing at them, instead of the stage.  The cameramen were experienced and talented, and had nice transitions from shot to shot, nice split shots eg JH and Ray during NIWS, and they actually seemed to know the concert – that is, WHERE to be focused on at all times.  Well, not ALL times!  During the flute intro to ILS, we were treated to an extended close up of Justin chugging a bottle of Poland Spring, and drank it with him to the last drop.  (The polite burp at the end was not included.)  Security was pleasant and friendly to the point where we had trouble getting rid of a friendly usher who was trying to pick up the Redhead.

THE CONCERT
The permanent setlist was performed with an intermission.  Everything was very good, and English Sunset was dug out of the pit from the evening before, and placed back on the pedestal where it belongs.  No longer sad and sorry, but close to perfect.   John was particularly enthused and animated this evening, and I’m sure it had nothing to do with the pubescent darlings on the front row.  It’s amazing what a good night’s rest can do!  John’s preoccupation with the dancing girls caused him to almost miss the shuffle.

The most interesting part of the evening was the featuring of the rest of The Band on the video screens.  Apparently, the cameramen didn’t know that the back-ups are to be kept in the dark.  We had great shots of Paul and close-ups of Gordon hard at work.  Bernie’s did not do her justice.

It was great seeing KarenE again, this time at her home venue.  She’s very proud of it, and should be. We sincerely hope to see you there again!
