Nights In White Satin
been described as haunting, uplifting, depressing, timeless, blase, and '4 minutes of nothing'.
So well-known is the song that it's nearly impossible
to hear a Moody Blues interview without the questioner asking for the story
behind it.
There's
not space here to tell everything about this song (entire
magazine articles have been written about it) but in 1988 author Justin
Hayward told the Atlanta Journal and Constitution, "Only recently did I
realize that I wrote it - and this will sound very corny, so I apologize
up front - about the adoration of women. All women."
The
45 rpm version of Nights has sold over 5 million copies since its
release in 1967, and is quite possibly the most-frequently covered rock
song in history. Though some of the covers are less than brilliant,
many are quite good, and it's interesting to hear the different interpretations.
The music player contains a link to each artist's website or purchase page (the Artist Info button). If
you like someone's rendition of Nights you may also enjoy hearing more of their music. I know I have!
The player is loaded with 35 songs. Except for the Moody Blues versions, the playlist will be changed every two weeks.

Nights In White Satin has been covered in a myriad of styles and languages. Though the foreign versions have been
harder to locate than the English, seven languages are represented - French, Italian, Czech, German, Spanish, Sardinian, and Chinese. There are 2 different French interpretations, 3 Italian, and 3 Spanish. In this section, I've gathered as many of the foreign lyrics as I could find, along with their English translations. (I am not fluent in any other language, so if
you can help with anything missing or wrong, please let me know by clicking the email link on any page.) None of the songs
are literal translations of Justin's original lyrics.
